Failure Analysis of Paints & Coatings

The work of a detective is much like a failure analysis investigation. In a paint failure analysis, for example, clues and relevant facts concerning the investigation must be gathered, analyzed, and studied to make a knowledgeable determination. A Capital Inspector has firsthand field experience and NACE training which are of the utmost importance when conducting a failure analysis of paints and coatings.

A few causes of coating failure:

  1. Capital Inspectors were not present during work phases
  2. Inadequate coating selection
  3. Improper surface preparation and coating application
  4. Weather conditions not acceptable as per material data sheets
